SEOs contacting me through my website contact form. What to do?

October 3, 2013 by David Abramson Leave a Comment

I got an interesting (and amusing) email this morning through my website contact form, from an SEO professional pitching his services to help me rank on Google. It looked something like this:

Dear David,

Hi there, My name is Bill and I’m an SEO (search engine optimization) specialist. I’ve been looking through your site for a while and taking a look at your keyword rankings in Google and I believe we can easily work together. [Read more…]

New gTLD Controversy: Opportunity or corporate power grab?

September 23, 2013 by David Abramson Leave a Comment

This is a continuation piece of my intro piece on the new gTLDs set to release this Fall. This one is focused on the politics and morals surrounding the new gTLDs. I don’t normally get political on my blog but when there’s an intersection between politics and technology, it seems like an appropriate discussion.

Anytime large sums of money are involved, you get some familiar players trying to make power grabs. [Read more…]

New gTLDs: Your dream domain name might be available soon

September 22, 2013 by David Abramson Leave a Comment

Food bloggers lining up to purchase the touted web domain myfavorite.pizza? Musicians, have you thought about the possibility of yourawesome.band? I imagine that the buzz being felt around the announced release of hundreds of new gTLDs (generic top-level domains) is similar to that of the people receiving the letters that gold had been discovered in California. Okay maybe as much buzz as the gold rush, but people are seeing some golden opportunities to find the perfect domain name that they missed in the .com registration era.

When will the new gTLDs become available? [Read more…]

Embracing “Beginner Mode”

On Being A Beginner

Last month, I took up rock climbing; something I haven’t really pursued since I was a kid at summer camps and birthday parties at our local rock gym here in Davis, CA. I’m not sure if it was the rediscovering of muscles long-neglected in my forearms or wondering where the “n00b routes” were, but there was no mistaking the fact that I was a beginner. [Read more…]

Rank on Google for Local Search

August 16, 2013 by David Abramson Leave a Comment

Q&A: How to rank on Google for local search?

Someone asked a good question this morning in a Facebook help group for Internet Marketing that I participate in:

“Is the general consensus that you can’t do a lot to get listed within a (search) result (‘Dentist Woodridge” for example’)? Or are there steps that greatly improve your odds? I used to think reviews were huge – but the more results I see the less reviews (if any) the other listings have” [Read more…]

New Gmail Layout 2013 | The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

July 23, 2013 by David Abramson Leave a Comment

What did Gmail do to their layout?

In case you haven’t seen yet, Gmail unveiled their new layout starting in late May 2013, which prompted me to look into the impact of the new layout for Gmail users, email marketers, and see the perspective of other tech gurus weighing in on the issue.

New Gmail Layout 2013

As someone who helps clients with e-mail marketing campaigns, you might expect me to have an averse reaction to seeing all our hard earned work in keeping people up to date with something they have expressed interest in going to their “promotions” inbox. [Read more…]

Should I use a slider on my website?

May 31, 2013 by David Abramson Leave a Comment

If you surf the web, you’ll probably see that more and more websites have a slider that rotates images and text and usually at the top of the home page (here’s an example of what a slider looks like).

It seems like nearly every client who’s hiring someone to build their website absolutely must have one while nearly every web developer and online marketing professional that I’ve talked to hides behind their laptop and covers their ears when they hear the word slider. [Read more…]

Ghost Blogging Platform Review

April 30, 2013 by David Abramson Leave a Comment

**Update 10/12/13: This article is pretty old right now. I plan on doing an in-depth review once it releases to the public. (in a couple days!). Make sure to follow their updates on Twitter and check out their website for the latest info.

A couple good recent articles on Ghost:

  • Ghost wouldn’t sell to Facebook
  • Technical review of Ghost Blogging Plaftorm by Zvonko Biškup

A friend showed me this Kickstarter campaign and after checking it out, I’m really excited to try Ghost out for myself. They surpassed their goal in just 24 hours and they are now raising their goal to £250K since they are doing so well already. A couple initial thoughts: [Read more…]

2/25/13: New happenings at makeyourselfvisible.com

February 26, 2013 by David Abramson Leave a Comment

Lately I’ve found myself so busy with doing marketing and website work for clients that I haven’t had the time to do the same things for myself. Fortunately a couple projects for clients were recently completed and I’ve had some time to clean up my website a bit and get around to some things to develop my own business that I haven’t been able to do.
